Damn Snooze Button
This must be a national epidemic when it comes to not waking up on the first alarm. Each and every day the alarm time is consistent for most of us millennials who have a 9- to- 5 gig. What’s so upsetting about snoozing is that you don't ever really feel rested once you officially get up. So why do we even torture ourselves to constantly and ignorantly press the snooze?
Below we both will explain our experiences with the snooze blues...
I have this really dope planner that allows me to prepare daily, weekly, monthly and monthly challenge goals. A couple days before March 2017, I was trying to prepare myself on what I would write down for my March Goals. I played myself by asking my Husband what he thought a good habit of building for the month should be for me?
At first, he didn't have anything, but then I was like “what about closing the cabinet doors in the kitchen so you don't bump your head.” That was a scapegoat! I got better at that and only have maybe one or 2 cabinets open now lmbo versus 6. Then, I was running ideas through him, I muttered: “maybe not snoozing so much.” He heard that very clear and thought that was a great idea because my snooze game is advanced. So I wrote it down in my planner.
I found writing to-do’s and goals for March very challenging this time around. My March goals were as follows:
- Set an alarm for 6:15 and only snooze one time
- Workout in the morning 1 time a week
- Log in food on MyFitnesss Pal
- Eat breakfast every day
- Run a mile under 15 mins.
It almost gave me anxiety just thinking about these goals because these are areas where I struggle. My monthly challenge was:
- To get more sleep
I tried to avoid writing down ‘Set an alarm for 6:15 and only snooze 1 time” because I just knew I had a chronic problem. Although I had anxiety writing it down, I told Chris, Hubby, and others to try and hold me accountable. I honestly and truly want to get good at waking up on the first alarm. I had a couple strong days, but many days the snooze has won. Out of 31 days, I got up 19 times after 1 snooze. To some that was a success, to me not so much. The snoozes made me lack sleep, and energy most days, which deprived me of getting certain things done.
If you’re like me, the snooze button is your best friend and worst enemy all in one! It brings a sense of relaxation and comfort when first initiated into a morning routine, yet in the same morning can cause havoc and panic after being pushed too far! (See what I did there?) Anyway, being a millennial we tend to have a lot going on. So much so that sleep is rarely attained and often cut short when possible in order to “make the most of life till’ the morning light”, and work mornings are no exception.
The use of the alarm clock has been around since the Industrial Revolution and has been a hit ever since. (Did you catch that one? Haha.) It’s not clear what eventually led to the invention of the infamous snooze button, but the world is all the more thankful for it nonetheless. But, has the snooze button actually made waking up in the AM better? Or has it in actuality caused more damage than good?
Why snoozing is actually bad?
When you constantly let your body fall back asleep, your mind thinks, “Ok, false alarm, stop waking up!” All that broken-up sleep can confuse your body and cause much more damage than good. Not to mention constantly snoozing will make it much harder to get into a healthy routine.
Dan Ariely, a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke wrote in the Wall Street Journal that snoozing can ruin the connection between a stimulus (your alarm going off) and response (you getting up) that you need for behavioral conditioning. If you were to start rising at your first alarm, Ariely says, it would eventually become an automatic response, and struggle. He continues to argue that by hitting the snooze button repeatedly, we're training our minds to be confused by the alarm sound. Instead of recognizing it as the "get out of bed" tone, it's the "just a few minutes more" sound — something that can continue indefinitely.
How To Break Up With The Snooze Button
Snoozing is one of those bad habits that most of us place at the top of the list because it literally causes nothing but grief and frustration after rushing around to get out of the house (late) for work. Sometimes, if we really commit, we can make ourselves wake up right away, without the snooze button, but it has only lasted about a week tops. However, we have noticed that when we kept a regular bedtime in the past, a period of time that will give us at least 7 hours rest. We've noticed that we have a much easier time waking up in the AM, and have less and less encounters with the snooze button. So, a good night’s rest is looking like the perfect place to start!
